The title “Attar” is translated as “horses” from the Altai language. A horse is one of the favorite animals of the Altai nomadic people, prized for its beauty and speed. The horse brings the singer from one mountain village to another where he performs for the people. In these melodies one can hear the horse galloping as it crosses the wide, open steppes.

About Altai Throat Singing
Altai Republic, Russian Federation

“When you live in the mountains, listen attentively to the language of local population, adjust to their rhythm of life and listen by a fire to throat singing “kai.” You will perceive the mountains and life there absolutely. Mountains are not only a vital space for local cultures, but also the whole of Altai philosophy. Folklore ensemble Altai Kai performs traditional Altai music and songs, which are performed in styles of throat singing. These pieces convey the mountain people’s moods when they recollect the past, think of the present and dream about the future. Performers in Altai Kai share the philosophical outlook on life of the inhabitants of Altai in which spiritual values, religious beliefs, legends, have been merged…” excerpted from www.altai-republic.ru, where more information on the Altai can be found.
